Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj quit ‘American Idol’, LeBron James puts Miami on his shoulders, Justin Bieber this, Kim Kardashian that. For many Americans, any article about these and other pop-culture icons is big time “news.” However, let me ask you:
Are they fighting for your First Amendment rights?
Are they working to fix a tax code that’s beyond confusing?
Are they looking for solutions to strengthen this country and protect the Constitution?
“We must have government, but we must watch them like a hawk.” – Millicent Fenwick
A couple of weeks ago I was watching my favorite news broadcast, “The O’Reilly Factor”, and an interesting segment caught my attention. The segment was about Americans being uninformed about important events occurring in our country with our government, specifically the Benghazi, AP, and IRS targeting scandals. The reporter that was in charge of the segment hit the streets and started to talk to as many people as possible, asking them what they knew about the three previously mentioned scandals. Unfortunately many of those people had no clue what was going on in our country. What may be even more troubling was that some who did know, didn’t really see them as a big deal. “We the people” cannot hold our government responsible and maintain our freedom if we just turn a blind eye to what is going on and let those who “govern” do whatever they please.
“When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.” – Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was certainly an inspired man in his role in helping establish America as the blessed land that it is. As I think about this quote and the times we live in, I fear that we are becoming a people that fears its government. We must do what we can to make sure the government fears the people, and this all starts with becoming informed.
“While many Americans don’t seem to understand the seriousness of the IRS situation, those who love the country do. You cannot have an agency that has the power to put Americans in prison, to take their money, to literally ruin their lives, persecuting people for political reasons. That’s what they do in China. That’s what they do in Cuba. We do not do that here.” – Bill O’Reilly
For me personally, the IRS scandall is the scariest of them all, and the quote from O’Reilly says it all. A government agency that can put people in jail, take their money, and persecute people based on political ideology is about as tyrannical as we have seen in this country.
While you and I cannot directly do anything now, we can help in the long run. Become Informed. Listen to the issues and think about how they affect you and your liberties. I guarantee that you too, being the American-loving person you are, will want to help defend what makes this country great!
